Glossary
'Access Code' means a short Non-Geographic Number, usually beginning with '1' that allows End-Users to access a wide range of services. There are three types of Access Code:
(i) Type A Access Codes are available for use by all providers of a Public Telephone Network and are used in such a way as to enable End-Users to access designated services across all Public Telephone Networks.
(ii) Type B Access Codes are Allocated individually by Ofcom and are Adopted in such a way as to either (i) enable End-Users to access services provided by their Communications Provider or (ii) enable End-Users to access services provided by other Communications Providers (e.g, Indirect Access and Directory Enquiry Facilities). and
(iii) Type C Access Codes are available for use for service provision within a Communications Provider's own Electronic Communications Network. The use of Type A and Type C Access Codes is restricted through the Numbering Condition.
'API' Application Programming Interface; this is a source code interface that a computer application or operating system provides to support requests for services to be made by another computer program. TTNC's API receives and sends out commands directly from the Telecom's Switch.
'Area codes' this is 3 to 6 digit long number beginning with 01 or 02 and which represents an Area of Town in the UK.
'Asterisk' is an open source/free software implementation of a telephone private branch exchange (PBX) and it allows a number of attached telephones to make calls to one another, and to connect to other telephone services including the public switched telephone network (PSTN).
'BT' means British Telecommunications plc, whose registered company number is 1800000, and any of its subsidiaries or holding companies, or any subsidiary of such holding companies, all as defined by section 736 of the Companies Act 1985, as amended by the Companies Act 1989.
'BT's Standard Local Call Retail Price' means the retail price for a Local Call made by BT customers which operates as the standard retail price before the application of calling packages and discounts as shown on BT's retail price list.
'BT's Standard National Call Retail Price' means the retail price for a National Call made by BT customers which operates as the standard retail price before the application of calling packages and discounts as shown on BT's retail price list.
'C7' refers to a standard for common channel signalling in Electronic Communications Networks (also known as 'SS7').
'Called Party' means the person being contacted by means of a telephone call.
'Calling Line Identification' means a facility that enables identification of the number from which a call is being made or to which a return call could be made.
'Carrier Pre-Selection' means a facility which allows a Subscriber to whom a Publicly Available Telephone Service is provided by means of a Public Telephone Network to select which Pre-selected Provider of such Services provided wholly or partly by means of that Network is the Pre-Selected Provider he wishes to use to carry his calls by designating in advance the selection that is to apply on every occasion when there has been no selection of Provider by use of a Telephone Number.
'Carrier Pre-Selection Code' means a non-diallable four (4) digit Telephone Number commencing with the digit eight (8) (i.e, 8XXX), that is Adopted or otherwise used in connection with the provision of Carrier Pre-Selection.
'CDR' Call Data Records; this is the data generated by a Telecom's Switch which gives information on inbound Calls.
'CLI' Calling Line Identity; this is a Telephone Number of a line that is making an outbound Call.
'Conservation Area' means a geographic area that Ofcom believes has a realistic expectation of number exhaustion within the next five years.
'Data Build' this is when Telephone Number ranges are added to BT's Network and other Originating Operators Networks. Once this has been done, people using those Networks will be able to call the Numbers.
'Dial-In Number' this is a 0845 Number which end users call in order to change the routing of their Number/s.
'Directory' means a printed document containing Directory Information on Subscribers of Publicly Available Telephone Services in the United Kingdom which is made available to members of the public.
'Directory Enquiry Facility' means Directory Information provided by means of a Public Telephone Network.
'Directory Information' means, in the case of a Directory, the name and address of the Subscriber and the Telephone Number assigned to the Subscriber for their use of Publicly Available Telephone Services and, in the case of a Directory Enquiry Facility, shall be either such a Telephone Number of the Subscriber or information that such a Telephone Number of the Subscriber may not be supplied.
'DTMF' means, Dual Tone Multi Frequency and is used for telephone signalling over the line in the voice-frequency band to the call switching centre. The version of DTMF used for telephone tone dialling is known by the trademarked term Touch-Tone, and is standardised by ITU-T Recommendation Q.23. Other multi-frequency systems are used for signalling internal to the telephone network.
'Emergency Organisation' means in respect of any locality:
(a) the relevant public police, fire, ambulance and coastguard services for that locality. and (b) any other organisation, as directed from time to time by Ofcom as providing a vital service relating to the safety of life in emergencies.
'End User' The End User is the Individual or Organisation using a Number for Inbound Call Services such as NTS.
'Freephone Number' means a number with the prefix 080 and 050 which incurs no cost to the person dialling it.
'Geographic Area Code' means a Telephone Number identifying a particular geographic area.
'Geographic Number' means a Telephone Number with the prefix 01 or 02 and where part of its digit structure contains a Geographic Area Code.
'IAX' is the Inter-Asterisk eXchange protocol native to Asterisk PBX and supported by a number of other softswitches and PBXs. It is used to enable VoIP connections between servers as well as client-server communication.
'Inbound Routing Code' means a Telephone Number Adopted or otherwise used for the Portability of Geographic Numbers to identify Electronic Communication Services, carriers and End-Users.
'Local Call' means a call made from one Geographic Number to another Geographic Number within a limited geographic area and usually using the same Geographic Area Code.
'Local Dialling' means the ability for an End-User to contact a Called Party within the same Geographic Area Code area by dialling only the Local Number.
'Local Number' means a Geographic Number (excluding the Geographic Area Code).
'Memorable' a 'Memorable' number is a telephone number which is easily recognised or remembered, once it has been seen or heard. Memorable numbers are usually made up of repeating groups numbers, or numbers ending in 00 or 000. They can also be made up of the Letters, for instance, 0845 468 3425 could be displayed as 0845 HOT DIAL. TTNC has graded numbers in to 5 memorable levels according to how memorable they are; bronze, silver, gold, platinum and diamond, all other numbers are classified as standard numbers.
'Mobile Number' means a Telephone Number with the prefix 071 to 075 inclusive and 077 to 079 inclusive.
'National Call' means a call made from one Geographic Number to another Geographic Number that is not a Local Call.
'Non-Geographic Number' means any Public Telephone Network Number other than a Geographic Number.
'NTS' Number Translations Service; when someone Calls a Number it is routed to another Number (Landline or Mobile).
'Novero Platform' this is TTNC's Web based Control Panel for Numbers and their Call Services. End users can Login using the Internet and have full control over their Number/s in Real-Time.
'Number Portability' means a facility whereby Subscribers who so request can retain their Telephone Number on a Public Telephone Network, independently of the person providing the service at the Network Termination Point of a Subscriber, provided that such retention of a Telephone Number is in accordance with this Document.
'Ofcom' is the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries, with responsibilities across television, radio, telecommunications and wireless communications services.
'Originating Communications Provider' means the Communications Provider from whose Electronic Communications Network the call originates.
'Otelo' is the Office of the Telecommunications Ombudsman in the United Kingdom.
'PBX' means Private Branch eXchange (PBX) and is a telephone exchange that serves a particular business or office.
'PECN' means Public Electronic Communications Network (PECN); TTNC is an Ofcom registered PECN Operator, this means we are permitted to provide Communications services to businesses and the public.
'Personal Number''Personal Number' means a Telephone Number which allows a Subscriber to receive calls or other communications at almost any Telephone Number, including a Mobile Number.
'Personal Numbering Service' means a service based on number translation that enables End-Users to be called or otherwise contacted, using a single Personal Telephone Number, and to receive those calls or other communications at almost any Telephone Number, including Mobile Numbers.
'PhonePayPlus' PhonePayPlus is the industry-funded regulatory body for all Premium Rate charged Telecommunications Services.
'Pin Code' means a 4 digit number that is used as a 'password' by a customer when using the Automated Dial-In Service to change the Routing of a Number.
'Portability' means any facility which may be provided by a Communications Provider to another enabling any Subscriber who requests Number Portability to continue to be provided with any Publicly Available Telephone Service by reference to the same Telephone Number irrespective of the identity of the person providing such a service.
'Provision' or 'Order'; setting up call routing on a number for the first time
'Premium rate' Special Services at a Premium Rate, that is charged at rates for Customers of BT which are generally either a) higher than 10p per minute up.
'Pre-selected Provider' means a provider of a Public Telephone Network who has notified the Dominant Provider that it is able and willing to provide Carrier Pre-Selection to Subscribers to whom the Dominant Provider provides Publicly Available Telephone Services.
'PRS' means Premium Rate Services; these services can cost from 10 Pence to £1.50 per Minute, or per Call and run on 09 and 0871 Numbers.
'PSTN' means the Public Switched Telephone Network and it is the network of the world's public circuit-switched telephone networks
'Public Pay Telephone' means a telephone available to the general public, for the use of which the means of payment may include coins and/or credit/debit cards and/or pre-payment cards, including cards for use with dialling codes.
'Public Telephone Network' means an Electronic Communications Network which is used to provide Publicly Available Telephone Services. it supports the transfer between Network Termination Points of speech communications, and also other forms of voiceband communication, such as facsimile and data. For the purposes of this document the term 'Public Telephone Network' shall include Integrated Services Digital Networks.
'Public Telephone Network Number' means either a Geographic or a Non-Geographic Telephone Number that is Adopted or otherwise used on Public Telephone Networks.
'Publicly Available Telephone Service' means a service available to the public for originating and receiving national and international telephone calls and access to Emergency Organisations through a number or numbers in this Document or an international telephone numbering plan, and in addition may, where relevant, include one or more of the following services: the provision of operator assistance services, Directory Enquiry Facilities, Directories, provision of Public Pay Telephones, provision of service under special terms, provision of specific facilities for End-Users with disabilities or with special social needs and/or the provision of non-geographic services.
'Radio paging Service' means Electronic Communications Services consisting in the conveyance of Signals by means of Wireless Telegraphy where every Signal, apart from simple acknowledgement, is ultimately transmitted from a station for Wireless Telegraphy comprised in the Communications Provider's Electronic Communications Network to a station for Wireless Telegraphy or Wireless Telegraphy Apparatus that is not comprised in that network.
'Radio paging Service' Routing is when we provide NTS on a Number, or in other words when one of our Numbers gets called, we 'divert' the call to the destination Number such as the customers Landline or Mobile number.
'Sexual Entertainment Service' means an entertainment service of a clearly sexual nature, or any service for which the associated promotional material is of a clearly sexual nature, or indicates directly, or implies, that the service is of a sexual nature.
'SIP' means the Session Initiation Protocol and it is an application-layer control (signaling) protocol for creating, modifying, and terminating sessions with one or more participants.
'Special Service' means a service paid for through the telephone bill of a Subscriber.
'Standard Area' means a geographic area that Ofcom believes does not have a realistic risk of exhaustion within the next five years.
'Subscriber' means any person who is party to a contract with a provider of Public Electronic Communications Services for the supply of such services.
'Subscriber Number' means a Telephone Number allocated to a Subscriber.
'Targeted Transit Code' means a Telephone Number that is Adopted or otherwise used to route calls relating to particular Electronic Communications Services between two points of Interconnection on an Electronic Communications Network.
'Telex Service' means a real-time switched service for the delivery of text via a direct or indirect connection to a discrete Telex network.
'Telex Service Number' means a Telephone Number that Adopted or otherwise used in connection with Telex Services.
'Terminating Communications Provider' means the Communications Provider on whose Electronic Communications Network a call terminates
'TLI' means Terminating Line Identity; this is the destination Number which we divert the Incoming calls to.
'UK-wide Number' means a Telephone Number with a prefix of 03.
'VoIP' means Voice over Internet Protocol, and it is the routing of voice conversations over the Internet or through any other IP-based network.
