Ofcom’s ongoing monitoring of rules to prevent silent calls

Posted by TTNC on June 28th, 2011

Now in it’s 5th year, Ofcom have decided to extend this initiative against ‘persons or organisations causing annoyance to consumers through the making of silent or abandoned calls’.

A ’24 hour policy’ was introduced to ensure that an actual person was on hand if a company intending to use Answer Machine Detection (AMD) more than once within 24 hours. This was accompanied with a maximum penalty of £2 million for persistent misusers.

AMD users had to comply by the 1st February this year, so now Ofcom are continuing to review the complaints coming in, I presume to see if this initiative is being effective or not. We wait patiently to see.

Dispute Resolution Guidelines and Information Gathering Policy – Ofcom update

Posted by TTNC on June 14th, 2011

Ofcom has published a statement on Dispute Resolution and revised Dispute Resolution guidelines. The revised guidelines simplify the dispute resolution process, making it more efficient and effective.

This seems to be a response to a rise in disputes being submitted to Ofcom, but also a mention of the government spending review highlights the need to reduce resources applied in resolving these often complex and contentious disputes.

The revised guidelines can be found here

They’ve also published an update on their information gathering policy. This incorporates changes to the Communications Act 2003 and Wireless Telegraphy Act 2006 as a result of the revised European Telecoms Framework.
