What do you need and how does it work?
In most cases, all you need is a TTNC number, a softphone and an Internet connection.
- Add one VoIP User for each person who wants to use the service. You can increase or decrease the amount of VoIP Users at any time, just paying for what you need.
- After adding a VoIP User to a number, you need to configure it and create a username and password using the myTTNC portal. You'll need these details so you can set up a VoIP device (softphone or VoIP phone) to use the service.
- Once you've configured the VoIP User and are set up on a VoIP device, you can forward your number to that device. We also provide PSTN failover, so you can choose to have incoming calls automatically forwarded to your landline or mobile if your VoIP device is offline.
- Making outbound calls with our VoIP service is easy. It has the added benefit of showing your TTNC Number as the caller ID (CLI), creating a professional image.

It’s important for me to display my TTNC number on outbound calls for privacy, consistency and allowing me to easily call back missed calls. It works and it’s saving me money. Can’t really ask for more!

How much bandwidth do I need?
On average, 3 concurrent calls would take about 256kbs of bandwidth when using the G.711a Codec, which is a high quality Codec TTNC uses
What Codec does TTNC use?
TTNC uses the G.711a Codec, which is one of the highest quality Codecs available. It provides digital quality and sound quality is superior to analog.
What is a Codec?
Codec stands for Coder-decoder. It converts an audio signal (your voice) into a compressed digital format for transmission (VoIP) and then back into an uncompressed audio signal for replay.
Codecs vary in the sound quality and the bandwidth required, most softphones, IP phones, IP PBXs and Gateways supports several different Codecs.
Is voicemail free?
Yes, all TTNC numbers come with a basic voicemail service which can be managed via myTTNC. Voicemail messages are emailed to your inbox and can also be listened to and stored online. Calls taken by voicemail are charged at 2p/min.
You can also upgrade to Voicemail Pro for £2 a month which allows you to edit or upload your own Voicemail greeting message rather than using our standard versions.
Can I use my number to call the emergency services?
No, you can't use your VoIP User service to make calls to the emergency services. Access to the emergency services requires you to register a location of your devices. We didn't feel this would work with the portable nature of VoIP Users as you'd have to update your address each time you change location. So we've restricted them from accessing the emergency services.
Can I use my number abroad?
Yes, you can use your VoIP phone service to make and receive calls from wherever you have an Internet connection. If you’re abroad and using your mobile, just check what your data charges will be with your mobile provider.
What kind of Internet connection do I need?
A standard broadband connection is sufficient to surf the Internet and use for voice calls at the same time.
What is call quality like?
Again, if you have a good Internet connection, call quality will be superior or at least the same as you receive when you use a landline or mobile phone.
How reliable is VoIP and SIP?
The bottom line is that it’s as reliable as your Internet connection, this is the most important factor.

What are the best softphones to use?
We’d recommend using either of Counterpath’s products - Bria for mobile or X-Lite for desktop. Or ZoiPer provide a mobile and desktop solution. These are the ones the TTNC team are using regularly.
Can I use a softphone app?
Yes you can. You can use a softphone on your computer, tablet or smartphone. Once you've created a VoIP User for your number you can enter the user details into your softphone and start making and receiving calls.
Can I forward all of my numbers (or multiple numbers) to a single VoIP User?
You can forward your inbound calls from any number to a single VoIP User. But 2 things to consider - a single VoIP User can only have 2 concurrent calls max. Also a VoIP User is linked directly with a number. That sets the CLI for your outbound calls. So any call out will only ever show 1 of your numbers. If you want to show a different CLI, you'll need a unique VoIP User on each number.
What happens if I lose my Internet connection?
When configuring a VoIP User, you can set up PSTN failover so that calls will be automatically forwarded to your landline or mobile if your VoIP phone or Softphone isn’t connected to the Internet.
How do I set up a VoIP User on a softphone or VoIP Phone?
The VoIP User enters the username and password into a softphone or VoIP Phone. This enables the VoIP device to register on our network allowing calls to be made or received.
How do I forward my phone number to a VoIP User?
Each VoIP User will be automatically added as a contact to your address book and will appear in your destinations list, making it easy to forward any of your numbers to that VoIP User.
How many channels or lines are there per VoIP User?
Each User has 2 channels, which means if you're on a call already you could call out to someone else and bring them into a conference call. We expect a VoIP User to be a human so seeing more than 2 concurrent calls would be unusual in our experience and we would contact the User.
What type of inbound number can I use?
You can use any type of number including UK Freephone numbers, 03 UK wide numbers and UK Local numbers. We can supply any of these with prices starting from £20 a number a year.
What is VoIP and SIP?
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol - a phone service that uses the Internet. SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol. It’s a protocol commonly used for VoIP applications (like ours) or even video calls and instant messaging.
